Lipedema
Lipoedema is the most common distribution, but also dysfunction of adipose tissue, affecting about 12% of women in Europe. In Germany alone, more than 4 million women suffer from lipoedema and in whole Europe about 40 million women . In those affected, swelling elements form in the sense of a congestion of the lymphatic fluid. The distribution disorder occurs mainly on the extremities (arms and legs) and the fatty tissue of the subcutaneous tissue and causes a dysfunction of the cells, which progressively leads to a disproportional body.
The word lipedema (Greek: Λιποιδημα) consists of two elements: lip = fat and edema = swelling.
Many affected women – only in rare cases it occurs in men – suffer greatly from lipoedema disease, both from the physical complaints and psychologically.
Women suffering from lipedema often do not feel taken seriously by their environment but also by doctors, as it is mistaken for normal overweight or obesity.
Lipedema is a disease that cannot be regulated by sports or a change in diet.
In order to alleviate the suffering of the patients and to ensure a better quality of life again, an earliest possible diagnosis – possibly by several doctors – a conservative treatment therapy or the permanent removal of the pathological fat accumulations make sense.
